GLOSSARY - "What does this word mean?"

Action - Any wager. A bettor is said to be in action when having a bet riding on any sporting event or table game.

Action Jackson - A gambler who wagers every day - day and night.

Active Player - One who is still in the pot.

Ante - In poker, a small portion of the minimum bet that each player is required to put into the pot before a new hand starts.

Any Craps - A one roll bet that the next roll of the dice will be a 2, 3 or 12.

Any Seven - A one roll bet that the next roll of the dice will be a seven.


Banker
- In a card game, dealer or the player who books the action of the other bettors at the table.

Bank Roll - A player's total available gambling money.

Basic Strategy - In Blackjack, the set of plays that you should make to maximize your advantage.

Bar The 12 - Makes the 12 a standoff for the wrong bettors, which allows the casino to keep its advantage on Don't Pass and Don't Come bets in Craps.

Beef - Any situation that is or may cause a problem.

Bet - Wager

Betting Limits - In a table game, the minimum and maximum amounts of money that you can wager on one bet. You cannot wager less than the minimum or more than the maximum amount posted.

Betting Right - Betting that the dice will win on Pass Line and Come bets in Craps.

Betting Wrong - Betting that the dice will not win, or pass, by placing Don't Pass and Don't Come bets in Craps.

Big 6 and Big 8 - A bet that pays even money that a six or an eight will be rolled before a seven in Craps.

Big Dime - A $10,000 wager.

Black - The most common color used for $100 chips.

Boat - Another term for a full house.

Boxman - The casino executive who is in charge of the Craps table. The boxman sits between the two dealers.

Break-Even Point - The break-even point is the point at which if you played forever, the bets you made would approximately equal the payoffs you would receive.

Buck - A $100 wager.

Bug - A joker.

Bump - To raise.

Burn Card - In card games, the card temporarily removed from play. After a shuffle and cut, one card is placed on the bottom of the deck or in the discard tray, which is called "burning the card".

Bust - In Blackjack, to go over twenty-one. If you bust, you lose.

Buy The 4 And 10 - Paying a five percent commission to the casino so that the 4 and 10 pays off at 2-1 on place bets.


Call
- In poker, when a player matches the current bet on the table. In keno and bingo, to draw the numbers for each game.

Card Counting - Keeping track of all cards that have been played since the shuffle.

Card Shark - A person who is an expert at cards.

Cashier - The place in a casino where players may redeem their casino chips for cash.

Casino Advantage - The edge that the house has over the players.

Change Color - Changing casino chips into smaller or larger denominations.

Chips - Round tokens that are used on casino gaming tables in lieu of cash.

C-Note - A $100 bill.

Cold - A player on a losing streak, or a slot machine that isn't paying out.

Come Bet - A wager placed after the come-out roll that the dice will pass in Craps.

Come-out Roll - The roll which establishes the point for the Pass and Don't Pass Line bettors.

Comps - Complimentary gifts used by casinos to reward players for Gambling.

Crap Out - Rolling a 2, 3 or 12 on the come-out roll.


Dealer
- A casino employee who deals the cards.

Dean (The) - A smart gambler who can calculate odds and percentages (also called The Professor).

Dice - The cubes, which are marked from 1 to 6, whose combinations when thrown determine the wins and losses at a Craps table.

Dime Bet - $1,000 wager.

Don't Come Bet - A wager against the dice placed after the come-out rol in Crapsl.


Easy Way
To make a point number (4,6,8 or 10) any way but the hard way in Craps.

Edge - Any advantage.

Eighter from Decatur The number eight in Craps.

Even Money - (1) A bet or proposition giving each player an equal chance to win. (2) A bet at correct odds. (3) A 50-50 bet.


Face Cards
- A King, Queen or Jack in a deck of cards.

Field Bet - A one-roll wager that the next number thrown will be a 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12 in Craps.

Free-Odds-Bet - A bet made in addition to the Pass Line, Don't Pass Line, come and Don't Come wagers which is paid at true odds in Craps.

Front-Line - A casino term for Pass Line in Craps.

Four-of-a-Kind - A hand containing four cards of the same rank.

Full House - A hand consisting of 3-of-a-Kind and a (different) pair.


G-Note
- $1,000 bill.



Hardway Bet - To bet the number 4, 6, 8 or 10 will be made with two duplicate numbers. 2-2,3-3 etc. in Craps.

Holding Your Own - Breaking about even.

Hot - Said of dice that are passing or a player on an extended winning streak.


Jacks or Better
- Draw poker in which a pair of Jacks is the minimum hand permitted to start the action.

Joker - A 53rd card in the deck, distinct from the others, used as a wild card or as a BUG.


Kicker
- In hands containing pairs and trips, the highest card not matched.

Kicker Trouble - Not having as high a kicker as an opponent.


Lady
- A Queen.

Lay The Odds - Odds bet against the number that pays off at less than even money.

Lay Wager - Betting against a point number that has been thrown by paying a 5 percent commission.

Limit - (1) Maximum amount a player may wager on a specific bet or event. (2) Maximum amount a player may increase a previous bet (at poker,etc). (3) Maximum amount bet before the casino/bookie changes odds and/or the points. Also known as the "cap".


Namble
- Internet Gambling.

Natural - (1) Blackjack - Ace and 10 count card. (2) Craps - 7 or 11 on the first roll.

Nickel - A $500 wager.

Nut - A gambler's overhead expenses.


Odds
- Correct odds are the ratio of favorable vs. unfavorable possibilities.

One Dollar - $100 wager.

One Eyed - The Jack of hearts, Jack of spades or King of diamonds. So named because the characters are drawn in profile, thus showing only one eye.


Pair
- Two cards of the same rank.

Pass - A winning situation for the right bettors in Craps.

Pay Off - Calling a bet with little expectation of winning, unless the opponent is bluffing.

Pit Boss - A casino employee who is in charge of all the tables in a particular area.

Place Bet - The place numbers are 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10. The place bet is a wager that either one or more of the place numbers will come up before a seven in Craps.

Point Numbers - The numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10 established on the come-out roll in Craps.

Push - A tie. Neither side wins or loses.


Quads
- Four-of-a-Kind.

Qualifier - A minimum standard that a hand must meet in order to win. Usually applied to the lowball side of a high-low split pot.

Quarters - A term used by experienced players meaning chips with a twenty-five dollar denomination.


Rack
- A box to hold chips or checks.

Rake - Money taken from each pot and given to the house in return for hosting the game. Usually a percentage of the pot (5%-10%) up to some maximum amount.

Reel - The spinning area on the slot machines displaying the various symbols.

RNG - Random Number Generator, used in slot machines to generate the various reel combinations.

Royal Flush - An Ace-high Straight Flush, the best possible hand in regular poker.

Rush A streak of winning many consecutive hands in Poker.


Score
- A substantial win.

Seven-Out - The rolling of a seven after the point has been established.

Snapper - Ace/10 - see natural.

Spit - A very small amount of money.

Stack - The amount of money (the stack of chips) a player has on the table.

Stake - The amount of a player's buy-in, or the amount of money they are willing to play with in a given session.

Straight - A hand consisting of 5 cards in sequence but not of the same suit.

Straight Flush - A hand consisting of 5 cards in sequence and of the same suit.


Tap Out
- To bet and lose one's last dollar.

Three-of-a-Kind - Three cards of the same rank.

Toke - A gratuity given to a dealer by a player.

Trey - A Three.

Trips - Three-of-a-Kind. In Hold'em, the term SET is used when two of the three cards are hole cards.


Wild Card
- A joker or standard card that, by player agreement and/or dealer's choice, can be used to represent any card desired.

Wise Guy - An educated professional gambler with an extensive track record of being a winning player.


Zombie
- A gambler who never shows emotion regardless of the outcome.
